The PDW4: A Hands-On, High-End Portable PC
The PDW4: A Hands-On, High-End Portable PC
Key Takeaways
- The GPD Win 4 is a powerful handheld gaming console for playing PC and Xbox games anywhere, but it lacks the comfort of its competitor, the Steam Deck.
- It features a built-in keyboard, but the small keys make it difficult to use, and it’s unnecessary for messaging in today’s multi-form factor devices.
- Despite its power and versatility, the GPD Win 4 is heavy, bulky, and uncomfortable to use.
Portable PC gaming has really taken off with the launch of the Steam Deck back in 2021. While that device was not the first, its presence on the market has helped competitors such as GamePad Digital (GPD).
They’ve been in the portable PC gaming market since 2016 and are now issuing the fourth GPD Win system. Boasting a full game controller, mouse mode, and even a hidden keyboard, the GPD Win 4 has higher specs than a Steam Deck.
But does it have what you need to enjoy PC gaming in any scenario?

What Can You Do With a GPD Win 4 Gaming Handheld?
Preinstalled with Windows 11 and equipped with an AMD Ryzen 7 6800U, the GPD Win 4 is a portable gaming machine. But whereas most handheld gaming systems today play retro games, this is something else entirely.
Picture Valve’s Steam Deck, then imagine how it might be running Windows and twice the processing power. That’s what you get with the GPD Win 4, a system that doesn’t only play the latest AAA titles on Steam, Epic, and Xbox Game Pass, it also lets you run classic titles. If your chosen emulation platform runs on Windows, you can play those old games on the GPD Win 4.
In fact, apart from a few console titles, you can play most games ever released on this device.
It’s Like a Steam Deck With a Physical Keyboard
One of the most stunning features of this device is the keyboard.
Hidden behind the display, the keyboard is there for a reason—but I’m not 100% certain what that reason is. The keys are too small for proper typing, after all, and in this day and age of multi-form factor devices and onscreen keyboards, it seems superfluous. Gamers tend towards headsets and voice chat for multiplayer, so the physical keyboard just doesn’t seem necessary for messaging.
When keys are required, connecting a keyboard seems smarter; an onscreen keyboard should be adequate in most cases.
That said, the action on the display’s sliding motion is nice. It feels like using a classic Windows Mobile phone, but this is arguably a direct lineage of “Pocket PC,” regardless of how many iterations and companies it took to get there.
What Does the GPD Win 4 Gaming Handheld Ship With?
Cracking open the GPD Win 4 box reveals a modest collection of kit. Aside from the Sony PlayStation Portable-esque main device, there is a wrist strap, screen protector, and USB Type-C mains power adapter.
The cable detaches from the charger (it’s USB Type-C at both ends) which makes it pretty flexible for most scenarios. Sadly, there’s no case or even a small tote bag with this handheld. Accessories are available for the device, however, including a case.
GPD Win 4 Gaming Handheld System Specification
The specification for this handheld PC will surprise you. For context, it measures 220 x 92 x 28mm (8.66 x 3.62 x 1.1 inches), and weighs 598g (21.1oz). Inside its PSP-inspired chassis, you’ll find an AMD Ryzen 7 6800U with AMD Radeon 680M graphics, 16GB of RAM, and a 1TB M.2 SSD with Windows 11 pre-installed. The OS ensures all expected video, audio, and picture formats are playable.
